Love and Laughter: Good Humor, A Powerful Attractor

Comedian Jim Gaffigan says life is easier for attractive people. “Think about it,’ he muses. “If a stranger smiles at you and they’re attractive, you think, ‘Oh, they’re nice,’ but if a stranger’s ugly, you’re like, ‘What do they want? Get away from me, weirdo.’

While Gaffigan has a point, he neglects to mention that if he’s right, life is also easier for funny people. Science has concluded that funny people are attractive. As a matter of fact, studies show there’s no better way to get someone into bed than by making that person laugh.

The Right Stuff
That’s correct! It’s not fancy cars. Cool clothes. Or even money. Psychological studies into the art of seduction show that the world’s greatest mickey is laughter. But before you run out the door dropping your totally awesome fart joke on every girl you see, you’ll want to read a little further, as not all jokes were created equal.

“'Many studies show that a sense of humor is sexually attractive, especially to women, but we've found that self-deprecating humor is the most attractive of all,' says Anthropoligist Gil Greengross. If you’re not sure what that means exactly, researchers give the following tips:

• Don’t take yourself too seriously. Be free to playfully make fun of yourself.

• Pomposity and talk of self-importance are big no-no’s. So don’t talk about how much your shoes cost or lie about how your dad single-handedly won Vietnam for America.

• Stay away from making fun of yourself too hard, especially if everyone already knows you’re a loser. If your shortcomings are obvious, talking about them excessively makes people uncomfortable. Don’t be a creeper.

The More You Know
The world isn’t equipped with just one type of humor and neither are people. Different people laugh at different things. And all the people who laugh at you, think you’re cute. So remember, if you find a style of humor that suits you, and someone to laugh at it, you’ve got a shot at making out. Good luck!
